This memorial scholarship, established by friends and family of David Bucknam, honors David’s passion for the out-of-doors, learning and living. A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, Bucknam was the Director of the Colorado Office of Active and Inactive Mines, which reclaims and restores abandoned mined land.
The Bucknam Memorial Scholarship will provide financial support to a junior or senior undergraduate student who is enrolled at an accredited college or university with a major in a field related to mine reclamation/restoration such as biology, botany, geography, geology, hydrology, environmental, range or soil science.
The first scholarship was awarded in November, 2006 (press release PDF). One scholarship will be awarded each year. The main fundraising event is the annual Bedbug Hat Trick, a hiking, biking, and driving event set in and around Colorado's front range. A new location is selected each year. The goal of the Fund is to create an endowment that will self-fund the scholarship awards every year.
Scholarship Eligibility: Those eligible to apply must be full-time students attending an accredited college or university in Colorado. The recipient will demonstrate a love for the out- of-doors, excitement about life-long learning, and an anticipated career devoted to environmental science. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in field work and team work. Students with at least an overall GPA of 3. 0 may apply. Preference will be given to those students who are pursuing a course of study directly related to reclamation or the environment. Application forms will be made available on this website every year.
